If you’re from California, chances are your history lessons included tales of the Great Gold Rush, a period of intense mineral speculation and excavation that drew prospectors from all across the nation. The Gold Rush was defined by the very elements of its name - gold was the desirable incentive that brought people from far and wide to California, and rush was the prevailing notion on how to get involved. The understanding was that the prospect of gold beyond measure was not an infinite offering - at some point, the free and easy gold would run out, and you just had to get in there as soon as possible in order to stake your claim and make your fortune.
The recent decision by the CPUC to end the tenure of NEM 2.0, and create a new iteration of the agreement to take its place, has inspired something of a second gold rush in California. This time however, it’s a rush on solar savings instead of gold. NEM 2.0 now has an expiration date, and at some point in the very near future, that particular gold vein is going to run dry. When that happens, California residents looking to invest in solar energy will have to rely on the new agreement, NEM 3.0.
To be clear, solar energy will still be an incredible investment and value generator under NEM 3.0 - nothing about the property value increase, rate hike protection, or battery backup is changing. However, for those interested in increased value through energy exporting, NEM 2.0 is the agreement to beat, and you’ve only got a limited window to take advantage of the current plan. The cutoff for NEM 2.0 applications is April 13th in California, and Simply Solar will no longer accept NEM 2.0 application requests after March 15th in order to ensure that our teams can accommodate the increased demand.
The most important takeaway from this little history lesson is to get in as early as you can. If you’re interested in going solar, you’ll want to get your application in now while there is still room at the inn. We have already seen a dramatic increase in interest, and those who are getting in now are experiencing the lowest possible wait times. Those times are only going to get longer as the utility becomes busier and busier handling NEM applications. By getting in before the rush reaches a frenzy, you’ll ensure that your application will navigate the fray with greater ease. You want to be the prospector with the best claim on the river, not the one nervously thumbing their pan as they gaze across a crowded stream.
The Solar Gold Rush is really very similar to the original California Gold Rush - there is a very real limitation to the availability of gold, and there is a very real limit to the availability of NEM 2.0. The CPUC change has already sent shockwaves through the industry, and providers like Simply Solar have had to innovate to accommodate the changes. We are leaning towards the creation of Zero Export systems, and we are encouraging the inclusion of battery storage to truly make the most of your generated energy, so whether or not you end up on NEM 2.0 you’ll still be receiving the most modern, thoughtful, and efficient solar system possible. That being said, if you have any interest in solar exports, you need to get in on NEM 2.0 while you still can.
If you want to make the most of this amazing solar opportunity, you’ll need a confident and capable guide to help you make it through the Solar Gold Rush. Simply Solar is prepared to help you stake your claim, and help you secure your grandfathered NEM 2.0 application.
