Demand for Solar Jobs is UP: Here’s How to Get In

Energy is becoming a hot button topic, and today more people are going solar than ever before. That means there are more opportunities to be had in the solar energy industry--for installers, planners, marketers, engineers, maintenance and more. The Solar Energy Industries Association estimates there are currently 40,000 solar professionals, 7,500 distributors and 810 manufacturers of residential solar products in the US alone. These companies are responsible for 13% of all new jobs in the energy sector each year. With so many opportunities available, and not enough people to fill the seats, solar businesses are competing for skilled labor to keep delivering as demand increases.

Research the Solar Industry

The first step is knowing you want to be a part of the growing solar industry, but the next step is to research how your skill set fits in and what is in demand. If you’re in a place with year round sun, there may be more opportunities than places that receive less sunlight. You can check online solar maps to find places where solar is the most active. Check out the Bureau of Labor and Statistics to get a bird's eye view of the industry and the kinds of jobs that would be available. Also review professional associations such as the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) to connect with others in the solar industry.

Choose a Skill or Job to Aim For

Keep a few different job types in mind to allow you more opportunity to explore your industry options. See what kinds of education are required, certifications needed, or experience requirements. While some may have little to no experience needed, others may require some training. There are a wide range of opportunities with solar like:

  • Assembler
  • Solar Panel Installer
  • Solar Project Manager
  • Welder
  • Construction Manager
  • Solar Sales Consultant
  • Solar Engineer
  • Renewable Energy Marketing

These positions often fall into a few main categories like administration, design, installation, logistics and planning, maintenance, sales and research.

Solar Certifications

Get a leg up on the solar job market with a certification as a technician or installer. These certifications often take less time than a college degree and can position you better to enter the solar workforce and build a lasting career. Technical programs and vocational schools can get you on your way fast to a career with Bay Area Solar Companies.

Online Solar Education

Check out the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners for online certification programs for solar energy professionals. These certifications are based on real-time needs from the industry to better serve solar customers, businesses, utility companies, and government regulating industries.
